Autumn Boating Tips

With the end of summer, many boaters start getting their boats ready for the cold winter months. But with the beautiful weather we've had lately, there's still time to get out and enjoy the water a few more times. However, there's a few things you should keep in mind before heading out on the water in Autumn. Here's some good advice to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time on the water this fall.
Fuel up. When summer ends, some fuel docks will close for the fall. Fill up ahead of time to avoid disappointment when you reach your destination.
Dress appropriately. Though autumn days may still be warm, the temperature can drop quickly as the sun sets. Dress in layers so you are prepared for all temperatures. Also pack rain gear in case of inclement weather.
Wear a PFD. You should always wear a PFD when on a boat. It's even more important during the fall. The day may be warm, but nights get cold. That means the water will be colder and a PFD can help protect you from the initial shock of the cold water.
Have lights. Remember, it gets darker much earlier in fall. Boaters can often be surprised that it's dark by 7 pm! Be prepared by having flashlights and a waterproof headlamp. Also, make sure your navigation lights are functioning correctly.
Check the weather before you head out. During fall, rain or strong winds can happen on very short notice. Check a weather forecast before heading out so you're not caught off guard.
Have a Float Plan. You should always have a float plan regardless of what season it is. Make sure you let someone know where you will be going and when you expect to be back. Remember, cell phones are great, but most have little to no reception in many boating areas, so make sure people know your plan before you go.
Bring a comfort drink. On cold days, a nice hot coffee or tea is a great way to warm up.
Inspect and test your VHF. When fall approaches, there may be fewer boats on the water, so some areas my have less water law enforcement. If you get in trouble, a patrol boat may not be nearby to help you. Before you head out, make sure your VHF radio is functioning properly, and that your cell phone is fully charged for use if the area you will be going to has a cellular signal.
